Back to School in Hamilton County: Make This Recare Visit Count
August 27, 2026 • 6 min read
Backpacks are packed. Sports practice is on the calendar. And somewhere between school forms and new shoes, recare appointments tend to slide.
That is the visit that matters most right now.
At Indy Smile Group, a routine recare visit is still a cleaning and an exam. It is also the easiest moment in the year to see how a growing smile is changing — before a small crowding problem, a crossbite, or an old sports chip becomes a bigger conversation in December.
What “recare” means at our offices
If you are already a patient at Smile Dentistry in Fishers, Simply Smile in Carmel, or Simply Smile in North Indy, recare is your regular preventive visit. Same team. Same office. No new-patient paperwork.
For families we already know, this visit includes a **complimentary Oral Health Scan** when one is due. That scan is part of the visit. It is not a separate product and it is not a coupon.
The scan is taken with the iTero® scanner we use at all three offices. No putty tray. Most kids treat it like a short video game of their own teeth.
Why this month, not “after volleyball starts”
Summer is hard on routines. Sports mouthguards sit in gym bags. Aligners get left in a napkin at the lake. Juice and sports drinks show up more than anyone wants to admit.
A fall recare visit lets us:
- Clean what built up over travel and late bedtimes
- Check growth and incoming adult teeth
- Compare this year’s Oral Health Scan with last year’s, when we have one
- Catch a chipped tooth, a loose retainer, or a crowding pattern while there is still time to plan
If your child is in Invisalign®, we can also check wear, fit, and whether the current plan still matches the school-year schedule.
Invisalign treatment at Indy Smile Group is **$4,979** for kids or adults. If a child needs the Invisalign Palatal Expander appliance, that is a separate **$749** add-on. A consult is required to determine candidacy. Individual results vary.
What the Oral Health Scan actually shows
Parents usually want a plain-English answer, so here it is.
The scan is a 3D model of the teeth and bite. We use it to look at:
- How crowded or spaced the teeth are becoming
- Whether the bite is shifting as adult teeth come in
- Wear, chips, and spots that are easy to miss on a quick look
- A year-over-year comparison when the last scan is on file
It does not replace X-rays when X-rays are due. On a typical hygiene cadence, bitewing X-rays are taken at one recare and the Oral Health Scan is taken at the next six-month visit if X-rays are not due. Every patient still gets at least one scan a year.
If it has been more than a year since the last scan — or there has never been one — tell the front desk when you confirm. We will make time for it at this visit.

What to do this week
1. Check the last recare date for each child — and yourself.
2. If anyone is overdue, call the office you already visit and get on the fall schedule.
3. Mention an overdue or missing Oral Health Scan when you confirm so we can plan the scan into the visit.
4. Bring current retainers, aligners, or a sports mouthguard if you have one. We would rather see it now than after it is lost in a locker.
School pictures, fall sports, and the first round of colds are already on the calendar. A clean, current scan of the smile is the one item that should be too.

Our team at Carmel, Fishers, and North Indianapolis is here to help. Choose your preferred location and appointment type.
Free consults available. We’ll match you with the right doctor and location.
