Your First Dental Visit at Indy Smile Group: What to Bring and How We Keep It Calm

October 21, 2026 • 6 min read

Starting Somewhere New Shouldn't Feel Overwhelming

Maybe you're an adult who has put off dental care for a while. Maybe you're a parent getting ready to bring your child in for the first time. Or maybe you get a knot in your stomach just thinking about a dental chair. Whatever brings you to us, the first visit sets the tone.

Indy Smile Group has three offices: Smile Dentistry in Fishers, Simply Smile Dentistry in Carmel, and Simply Smile Dentistry in North Indianapolis. At all three, we meet plenty of people who walk in a little nervous. Our goal is that you leave with a clear picture of your mouth and a next step that feels doable.

This post covers what to bring, what happens at the visit, and the small choices we make to keep the appointment calm and useful.

What to Bring on Day One

Keep it simple. You don't need a special kit.

  • Photo ID for the adult responsible for the account.
  • Your insurance card if you have dental insurance, and your Medicaid or Medicare card if you're enrolled in either. Our team will go over your coverage with you before any treatment.
  • A list of your medications, including vitamins and supplements, plus any allergies.
  • Your questions. Write them down if you think you'll forget them once you're in the chair. No question is too small.
  • Past dental records or X-rays if you have them handy. If you don't, that's fine.
  • A comfort item if it helps, like headphones, a favorite playlist, or a show on your phone.

Our team will help you with any forms, so you don't need to worry about having everything filled out ahead of time.

What Happens at Your First Visit

Here's the usual flow, so nothing comes as a surprise.

  1. A conversation first. Before we look at anything, we ask what brought you in and how you feel about dental visits. If past visits were hard, tell us. It helps us plan how to work with you.
  2. The exam. A dentist checks your teeth, gums, bite, and soft tissues, and talks you through what they see.
  3. X-rays, when they're needed. The dentist decides which X-rays you need based on your mouth and your history.
  4. A digital scan. Many visits include an Oral Health Scan, a 3D digital scan of your teeth and bite taken on our iTero scanner. There's no putty tray. You can read more about how we use it on our recare page.
  5. A plain-language review. We explain what's healthy, what needs attention, and what can wait. If treatment is recommended, we'll go over the costs with you before anything is done.

How We Keep It Calm

Small choices make a real difference for nervous patients:

  • You set the pace. Raise your hand any time you need a break, and we'll stop.
  • We explain before we act. No surprise tools and no surprise noises. We tell you what's next before we do it.
  • You can keep the first visit simple. If a lot at once feels like too much, tell us. We can focus on the exam and X-rays and plan a cleaning for another visit.
  • Bring a support person. A friend or family member is welcome to stay with you.
  • Quiet is fine. If you'd rather not chat, we'll keep the conversation to what you need to hear.

None of this replaces care you need. It just makes the first visit feel manageable, so you're more likely to come back for regular recare visits, the cleanings and exams that help keep small problems small.

Bringing Your Child

Children are welcome at all three offices. For kids and teens, book a regular new-patient visit. The adult offer described below doesn't apply to children. Let us know ahead of time if your child is nervous. We'll go slowly, explain each step in kid-friendly words, and let them see and touch things first.

A Starting Offer for Self-Pay Adults

If you're an adult paying on your own, you can start with our $99 New-Patient Exam & X-Rays* (self-pay adults 18+; not valid with insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare). It covers the new-patient exam and the X-rays the dentist decides you need. It does not include a cleaning. If you'd like a cleaning, or if any other treatment is recommended, it's billed separately, and we'll review the cost with you first.

If you have dental insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare, book a regular new-patient visit and our team will go over your coverage with you.

Finding Your Office

At every office, we treat the first visit as the start of a relationship, not a one-time transaction. If you already have a dentist and want a second opinion or an Invisalign consult, the same "what to bring" list works.

Our Public Prices

We publish our prices so you know where you stand:

  • $99 New-Patient Exam & X-Rays* (self-pay adults 18+; not valid with insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare). Exam and X-rays only. No cleaning.
  • Invisalign: $4,979 for kids or adults.
  • IPE appliance: $749, only when a child needs it after an evaluation.
  • Whitening: $399 in-office, or $249 take-home.
