Your Child’s Crossbite at 8 Does Not Have to Become Surgery at 18

June 10, 20267 min read

An eight-year-old with a crossbite does not need a scare story. They need a look at the foundation while it is still changing.

A crossbite today can become a much harder problem in the late teens. That is not a diagnosis from a blog post. It is why we ask to see kids early at Carmel, Fishers, and North Indianapolis — not to put every child in trays tomorrow, but to catch the cases where waiting makes the next decade more complicated.

Straight teeth are the bonus. The job is a stable bite, room for adult teeth, and a jaw that is growing in a healthier direction.

What we look for at an early visit

Parents usually notice one thing: a tooth that sits inside or a smile that looks shifted. We look at a longer list, without turning the visit into a lecture.

  • A bite that crosses in front or on one side
  • A high, narrow palate
  • Crowding that is already obvious in mixed dentition
  • Wear on baby teeth that should not be worn down yet
  • Mouth-breathing habits worth a calm conversation — not a label

None of those findings is a sentence. They are reasons to measure, scan, and decide whether watching is enough or whether early guidance would help.

What early treatment can include

When treatment *is* the right call, Indy Smile Group uses tools built for growing patients:

  • iTero® scanning instead of putty impressions
  • Invisalign First for many kids ages 6–10 who are good candidates
  • The Invisalign Palatal Expander (IPE) when a child actually needs that appliance

IPE is **$749** and only when it is needed. It is not bundled into every kid case.

Invisalign for kids or adults is **$4,979**. A consult is required to determine candidacy. Individual results vary. Early treatment often shortens what would otherwise become a bigger phase later. It does not guarantee that a child will never need more care as a teenager.

What we will not do

We will not diagnose sleep or airway disease from a blog. We will not promise that an expander prevents jaw surgery. We will show you the scan, explain the bite in plain language, and tell you if watching for six months is the wiser move.

If you want the longer parent conversation, start at Invisalign and ask for an early evaluation. Bring the child you are actually worried about — not a perfect attendance record.

How to get the first look on the calendar

Existing families can add this to a recare visit when an Oral Health Scan is due. New families can use the **$99** New Patient Special (exam, cleaning, and necessary X-rays; new patients only; not valid with insurance).

The best time to look is while the face is still growing. The second-best time is this month.
