Can I whiten my teeth during Invisalign?

Short answer: Yes. At Indy Smile Group, you can whiten your teeth during Invisalign® treatment. Plan it with your dentist first, who will go over timing, any attachments on your teeth, your sensitivity, and your treatment plan. Don't start an over-the-counter whitening product in your aligners without asking.
Why timing matters
Clear aligners are worn most of the day and taken out only to eat, drink anything but tap water, brush and floss, according to the AAO. Some whitening gels can be used in trays. But attachments, the small tooth-colored bumps some plans use, cover part of the tooth surface, and whitening around them may look uneven.
What the research says
Research is mixed. In a survey of orthodontists published through the NIH's PubMed Central, most of those surveyed preferred to wait until treatment ended, but the authors noted a lack of consensus and called for more research. At Indy Smile Group, you can whiten during Invisalign treatment, and we plan it case by case.
Safety basics
The ADA notes that tooth sensitivity and gum irritation are common side effects of whitening and are typically temporary. Whitening also doesn't change the color of fillings, crowns or other restorations.
Our suggestion
You can whiten during Invisalign treatment with us. Ask at your next aligner check, and your dentist will help you plan when to whiten.
At Indy Smile Group
We offer in-office whitening (starting at $399) and take-home whitening (starting at $249). Whitening prices are the same at all three offices and cover both arches. “Starting at” applies to regular in-office and regular take-home whitening; KöR whitening costs more, so call for details. Your dentist checks your teeth and gums first and confirms your price before treatment. Results vary, and whitening doesn't change the color of fillings, crowns or veneers. We provide Invisalign® at all three offices. If you're in aligner treatment with us, you can whiten during treatment; your dentist will help you plan the timing. Frequently asked questions
Can I use whitening strips with aligners?
Ask your dentist first. Attachments and your treatment stage can affect results and comfort.
Is it better to whiten after Invisalign?
No. At Indy Smile Group, you don't have to wait: you can whiten during Invisalign treatment, and your dentist will help you plan the timing.
Will whitening make my teeth sensitive during treatment?
Sensitivity is the most common side effect of whitening and is usually temporary. Tell your dentist if your teeth are already sensitive.
