What causes yellow teeth?

Short answer: Common causes include stains from coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco, and aging. The ADA explains that enamel thins over time, letting more of the yellowish layer underneath show through. Some medicines, injury and genetics can also change tooth color. Surface stains often respond to whitening, but some discoloration doesn't. A dentist can help tell which kind you have.
Causes the ADA lists
- Food and drink. Coffee, tea and red wine contain color pigments that attach to enamel.
- Tobacco. Tar and nicotine create stubborn stains.
- Age. Enamel gets thinner and more of the yellowish dentin shows through.
- Injury. A tooth that's been hit may darken as it lays down more dentin, the darker layer under the enamel.
- Medicines. Some medicines can darken teeth, and certain antibiotics taken while teeth are developing can discolor them.
Other causes
MedlinePlus adds genes, poor oral care, too much fluoride and some medical conditions. It advises seeing your dentist if teeth are an unusual color without an obvious cause, or if the color lasts even after good cleaning.
Will whitening help?
The ADA says yellow teeth will probably bleach well, but brown teeth may not respond as well and gray tones may not bleach at all. Whitening also won't change crowns, veneers or fillings. See What's the best way to whiten teeth?
At Indy Smile Group
We offer in-office whitening (starting at $399) and take-home whitening (starting at $249). Whitening prices are the same at all three offices and cover both arches. “Starting at” applies to regular in-office and regular take-home whitening; KöR whitening costs more, so call for details. Your dentist checks your teeth and gums first and confirms your price before treatment. Results vary, and whitening doesn't change the color of fillings, crowns or veneers. Your dentist checks the cause of the color first, because not all discoloration responds to whitening. See our whitening page.

Frequently asked questions
Can brushing remove yellow stains?
Good brushing helps with surface stains from food and drink, according to MedlinePlus. Deeper discoloration may need other treatment.
Are yellow teeth unhealthy?
Not necessarily. Natural tooth color varies. See a dentist if the color changes suddenly or affects one tooth.
Does whitening toothpaste work?
The ADA says ADA-Accepted whitening toothpastes have extra polishing agents to remove surface stains, but they don't change the color of your teeth the way bleaching does.
