How much does teeth whitening cost?

Reviewed by Dr. Samuel Bacon, DDS (dentist). Last reviewed November 3, 2026.

Status: Approved

Short answer: Teeth whitening cost depends on the method: whitening toothpaste, over-the-counter products, custom take-home trays from a dentist, or in-office whitening. At Indy Smile Group, as of November 2026, in-office whitening starts at $399 and custom take-home whitening starts at $249. Your dentist checks your teeth first and confirms your price before treatment.

What affects the cost

  • The method. The ADA describes four main options: stain-removal toothpastes, in-office (chairside) bleaching, at-home bleaching with custom trays from your dentist, and over-the-counter bleaching products.
  • Strength and supervision. Over-the-counter products use lower bleach concentrations than the products dentists use. Dentist-supervised whitening includes a check that whitening suits your teeth.
  • Your teeth. Whitening doesn't change the color of crowns, veneers or fillings. It may not help discoloration caused by medication or injury. The ADA notes that yellow tones usually respond better than brown or gray tones.
  • Upkeep. Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco can re-stain teeth over time.

What to expect

A dentist checks for cavities, gum problems and existing dental work first, because the ADA recommends an exam before bleaching. In-office whitening usually takes one visit. Custom-tray whitening at home takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the price say 'starting at'?
“Starting at” applies to regular in-office and regular take-home whitening; KöR whitening costs more, so call for details. Prices are the same at all three offices and cover both arches. Your dentist checks your teeth and gums first and confirms your price before treatment.

Does insurance cover teeth whitening?
Whitening is usually considered cosmetic, so many plans don't cover it. Check your plan, or ask us to check it for you.

Will whitening work on my crowns or fillings?
No. Whitening changes natural tooth color only. Crowns, veneers and fillings stay the same shade.
