Do I need attachments with Invisalign?

Status: Approved

Short answer: Many people do, but not everyone. Attachments are small, tooth-colored bumps bonded to some teeth during clear aligner treatment. The American Association of Orthodontists says they help the aligners move teeth. They're removed when treatment is complete. Your dentist decides whether you need them and where, based on your treatment plan.

What attachments are

The AAO describes attachments as tooth-colored "bumps" placed on teeth during clear aligner treatment. The aligner grips them, which helps it apply pressure in the right direction.

When they're placed

The AAO lists attachment placement as part of the visit when you receive your aligners, along with instructions on wearing and caring for them.

What to expect

  • They're tooth-colored, so they're less noticeable than metal brackets.
  • Your aligners may feel snug at first because they fit over the attachments.
  • They come off. The AAO notes attachments are removed once treatment is complete.

Caring for them

Brush carefully around attachments. If one comes off, call the office.
