Can I use hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash?

Reviewed by Dr. Samuel Bacon, DDS (dentist). Last reviewed November 3, 2026.

Status: Approved

Short answer: Hydrogen peroxide is an active ingredient in some whitening mouthrinses, which the ADA says may contain 1.5 to 2 percent. The ADA's guidance covers rinses sold for use in the mouth, not household peroxide. Peroxide whitening can cause temporary tooth sensitivity and gum irritation. Ask your dentist before you start, and choose a product with the ADA Seal.

What the ADA says about peroxide rinses

The ADA lists peroxide among the active ingredients found in mouthrinses. Several whitening mouthrinses contain it, and the ADA says these may help reduce surface (extrinsic) stains.

Possible side effects

According to the ADA, the most common side effects of peroxide tooth whitening are temporary tooth sensitivity and gum irritation. Tell your dentist if a rinse makes your teeth or gums sore.

Whitening and dental work

The ADA says only natural teeth can be whitened. Crowns, veneers and tooth-colored fillings won't change color. If you have dental work in the front of your mouth, talk with your dentist before trying to whiten. See Natural ways to whiten teeth.

Children

The ADA says children under 6 shouldn't use mouthrinse unless a dentist tells them to, because they may swallow it.

Peroxide for canker sores

MedlinePlus lists dabbing a mix of half hydrogen peroxide and half water on a canker sore with a cotton swab as one home-care option. That's a different use from rinsing. See How do I get rid of canker sores?
