How long do veneers last?

Short answer: Veneers are a long-term treatment, but they don't last forever, and there's no set lifespan. The ADA says a veneer may chip, crack, wear down or loosen over time and need to be re-bonded, repaired or replaced. The ADA describes porcelain veneers as strong and long-lasting, and composite veneers as easier to fix but less stain- and wear-resistant. Your habits and daily care also matter.

Porcelain vs. composite

The ADA describes two main types:

PorcelainComposite
What it isA thin custom-made shellTooth-colored filling material bonded to the tooth
DurabilityStrong, long-lasting and natural-lookingNot as stain- or wear-resistant
RepairsNot addressed by the ADAEasier to fix if damaged
PlacementEnamel removed; made by a dental labMay need less enamel removed and fewer visits
CostTends to be the more expensive optionNot addressed by the ADA

What shortens a veneer's life

  • Grinding or clenching. The ADA says veneers may not be a good choice if you clench or grind your teeth, or have a deep overbite.
  • Biting hard things. The ADA advises avoiding fingernail biting and chewing hard objects or foods.
  • Injury. Wear a mouthguard for sports.
  • Decay. The ADA notes you can still get cavities under or around a veneer.

Before you decide

The ADA says veneers aren't reversible, because enamel is removed to place them. Any decay or gum disease needs to be treated first.

At Indy Smile Group

All three of our offices place porcelain and composite veneers in-house. Your dentist will go over porcelain vs. composite and what each involves before you decide. Veneers are usually considered cosmetic, so insurance may not cover them. Coverage depends on your plan. We check your benefits and give you a written estimate before any treatment, including emergency treatment. See our veneers pages for Fishers, Carmel and North Indy.
