What is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?

Short answer: Both are dental school graduates. An orthodontist has also completed an accredited specialty program focused on tooth alignment and the bite. The American Association of Orthodontists says that program adds 24 to 36 months of training. General dentists care for overall oral health, such as exams, fillings and crowns. Some general dentists also offer clear aligner treatment.
General dentists
A general dentist is your main provider for oral health. That includes checkups, cleanings, fillings, crowns, and finding and treating problems early.
Orthodontists
The American Association of Orthodontists says an orthodontist is a dentist who has gone on to complete an accredited orthodontic residency of 24 to 36 months. Orthodontists focus on straightening teeth and correcting the bite.
Can a general dentist straighten teeth?
The AAO says a dentist may be able to provide braces or aligners, but that doesn't make the dentist an orthodontist. Whoever you see, ask about their training and experience with your kind of case.
Which one should you see?
For most care, start with a general dentist. If you're thinking about straightening your teeth, an exam can show what your bite needs. See Invisalign® vs. braces.
At Indy Smile Group
Our general dentists offer Invisalign clear aligner treatment. After an exam, your dentist will go over whether Invisalign or another option, such as braces or a referral to an orthodontist, fits your needs. See our Invisalign page.

The ADA says DDS and DMD are the same degree, with the same education.
Do I need a referral to see an orthodontist?
For children, the AAO says you don't have to wait for a dentist's referral. Check whether your insurance plan requires one.
Can my general dentist do my Invisalign treatment?
Some general dentists offer clear aligner treatment. After an exam, your dentist can say whether your case fits that or needs a referral.
