How much does a dental implant cost?

Short answer: The cost of a dental implant depends on how many teeth are replaced, whether you need extra steps such as an extraction or bone support first, and the type of crown, bridge or denture placed on top. Your dentist explains each step first. Coverage depends on your plan. We check your benefits and give you a written estimate before any treatment, including emergency treatment.
What affects the cost
- The number of implants and teeth. A single implant with a crown costs less than several implants that support a bridge or denture.
- Preparation. Some people need a tooth removed, or other steps, before an implant can be placed.
- The healing phase. According to the ADA, the bone around an implant has to heal and grow around it (osseointegration). This can take up to several months before the replacement tooth is attached. Some patients can have the implant and the tooth placed in one visit.
- The final tooth. A single tooth is usually a custom crown. Replacing several teeth may use a custom bridge or denture.
- Your health. The ADA notes that general health matters more than age. Conditions such as diabetes, and tobacco use, can slow healing. A physician may evaluate you before surgery.
- Insurance. Coverage for implants varies widely between plans.
What to expect
Implants are titanium posts placed in the jaw that act as a root for the new tooth. The FDA describes the system as the implant body, an abutment and the crown, bridge or denture. Your dentist reviews your mouth, your health history and your imaging, then explains your options, including alternatives such as bridges or dentures.

Frequently asked questions
Why do implant prices vary so much?
The total depends on the number of implants, any preparation needed, healing time and the type of crown, bridge or denture. Coverage depends on your plan. We check your benefits and give you a written estimate before any treatment, including emergency treatment.
Am I too old for an implant?
According to the ADA, your general health is more of a factor than your age. Your dentist and physician can review whether an implant fits your situation.
Are there alternatives to an implant?
Yes. Bridges and dentures are common alternatives. Your dentist can explain the trade-offs for your situation.
