Are dental implants worth it?

Short answer: For many people missing a tooth, an implant is worth considering. It's anchored in the jawbone, it doesn't rely on neighboring teeth, and it can restore chewing and speaking. It also takes surgery, healing time and good daily care. Whether it's worth it for you depends on your health, your bone and your goals.
What an implant does
An implant is a small post placed in the jawbone. According to the ADA, the bone grows around it over time in a process called osseointegration. That's what holds it firmly in place. A crown, bridge or denture is then attached on top.
Reasons people choose implants
- Neighboring teeth stay untouched. The ADA notes implants can be an option for people who don't want healthy tooth structure removed to make a bridge.
- Function. The FDA says replacing a lost tooth with an implant can significantly improve quality of life and health. Missing teeth can lead to bone loss, speech changes or chewing problems.
- An alternative to loose dentures. Implants can support a bridge or denture when more than one tooth is missing.
Things to weigh
- Surgery and time. The implant needs time to bond with the bone before the final tooth is attached.
- Health factors. The ADA says your overall health matters more than your age. The FDA notes that smoking may slow healing and lower long-term success. Uncontrolled diabetes and untreated gum disease are also listed risks.
- Complications can happen. The FDA notes that problems can occur soon after placement or much later. Some lead to the implant loosening or failing.
- Other options exist. A bridge or a denture may suit you better. See bridge vs. implant.
